ETL Visits HMS Queen Elizabeth : Supporting Critical Naval Infrastructure

Electronic Terminations Ltd (ETL) recently had the privilege of visiting the HMS Queen Elizabeth while she was docked in Edinburgh — an impressive example of modern British engineering and a cornerstone of the UK’s defence capability.

As the lead ship of the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth plays a vital role within the Royal Navy. Designed to support advanced aviation operations, including the deployment of F-35B Lightning II aircraft, the vessel represents one of the most sophisticated and capable warships ever built for the UK.

A First-Hand Look at a World-Class Platform

For the ETL team, the visit provided a valuable opportunity to experience the scale and complexity of the platform first-hand. Aircraft carriers of this calibre rely on highly integrated systems operating seamlessly in one of the most demanding environments possible — at sea, under constant operational pressure.

Understanding how systems perform in real-world conditions is critical. Visits like this allow us to maintain a close connection between design, manufacturing, and end-use application — ensuring our solutions continue to meet the highest standards of reliability and performance.

ETL Supports systems on HMS Queen Elizabeth

Supporting Mission-Critical Systems

As a UK-based manufacturer of ruggedised cable assemblies and electronic interconnection solutions, ETL is proud to support projects within the defence sector. Our work often involves supplying components for systems where performance, durability, and reliability are essential.

While much of our involvement in defence programmes is necessarily confidential, our focus remains consistent:

  • Delivering robust, high-quality assemblies
  • Supporting long-term system reliability
  • Working closely with partners to ensure ongoing performance and maintenance

During the HMS Queen Elizabeth visit, we were able to review elements we have supported and discuss ongoing maintenance and future requirements. This collaborative approach helps ensure that systems remain fully operational and continue to perform as expected throughout their lifecycle.

Engineering for Harsh Environments

Naval environments present unique challenges — including exposure to moisture, salt, vibration, and temperature variation. ETL’s experience in designing and manufacturing for harsh conditions ensures that our products are built to withstand these demands.

Our capabilities in this area include:

  • Ruggedised and weather-resistant cable assemblies
  • Overmoulded and sealed interconnect solutions
  • High-reliability wiring harnesses for critical systems
  • Full testing and quality assurance to meet stringent specifications

These capabilities are equally applicable across other sectors we support, including aerospace, nuclear and highways infrastructure.

Proud to Support UK Defence Engineering

At ETL, we take great pride in contributing to projects that support national infrastructure and defence. Working alongside organisations within the UK’s engineering and defence ecosystem reinforces our commitment to quality, reliability, and continuous improvement.

We would like to extend our thanks to the team onboard HMS Queen Elizabeth for their time and support during our visit. It was a valuable and insightful experience for everyone involved.
